Calling All Moderators: The Baby Off Board Message Board

by Aurora Bordeaux

One of the coolest things about Baby Off Board is how much commenters want to connect with one another. Since starting the blog, I’ve gotten requests to help people swap emails, find each other on Facebook, all sorts of stuff. Finally the hubs said, “Why don’t we just make a message board?”

Oh. Well, I hadn’t considered that before. But yes, why not?

The hubs, who is a genius worthy of the space program, is cooking up a forum for everyone as I type. He’s great like that—thank you, Hubs!

I’m excited to see Baby Off Board evolve into more of a community, which is what readers have already turned it into on their own. Baby Off Board readers are awesome, and the message board will make it easier for you all to connect if you want to. PS, if you get creative and end up doing a meetup, I really want to know about it and see pictures, because it would make me feel like the blog had altered the fabric of space and time or something. I could send you a cake or something. For real. : )

(I usually don’t go for emoticons because I like to keep the blog professional, but I figured since this is a post about a message board, emoticons are acceptable.)

A message board will let you all connect up and chat about the childfree life without always having to converse based on my soapboxing. Also, if you ever have a suggestion for a blog topic, there will be a spot for that, too. Ideas are always, always welcome.

Because I want the forum to be a fun, free place that’s clear of spam and haters, I’m looking for a handful of Off Boarders to be moderators. If you’re interested, you can shoot me a message through my about.me page and I’ll be in touch. Moderating shouldn’t be all that time consuming since we’ll have good spam filters and whatnot, and it should be a fun “job.” If you’re interested, give me a buzz!

In honor of the new forum and a variety of childfree voices, the next two blog posts will be from bestie guesties. Which is a silly way to say guest bloggers.

I look forward to seeing all you Off Boarders On the Board soon. Cheerio!

This is an absolutely fantastic idea! I’ve recently ‘come out of the closet”and have had some gossipy whispers uttered about me in The Boyfriend’s camp. Apparently his family finds my sharing of your wonderful blog very offensive. I feel quite betrayed – they could have said this to my face. So I embrace the idea of being able to comminicate with my fellow childfree community members more easily.
Has anyone else noticed how being childfree is the new being gay? People judge us for something that has NOTHING to do with them, they look down on us for making a decision that makes US happy. I cannot believe people expect us to embrace their little bundles of joy, but they refuse to support out childfreedom. It’s shocking, and hurtful I now realise. Anyway, your blog is like my religion and it keeps me sane when the haters get mean. Thanks for being awesome!

I’m so excited about the forum! It can be really isolating out here in the big ole baby making world, but just knowing other people share my point of view on not producing children and share my childfree lifestyle can be refreshing and almost exciting. I must say that I was part of a group once on Facebook for childfree people and had to unfriend myself from the group because there was, in my opinion, too much complaining about people with kids. I don’t mind a rant here and there, but I want to celebrate not having children more than complain about parents. I also seek support and encouragement from my childfree friends when the big ole baby making world gets all judgmental and mean on me. This forum will be great. What exactly does a moderator do?

Love this idea! I am so glad you are doing this! It would be great to connect with like-minded individuals and hear there thoughts etc. it definitely keeps you from feeling so isolated. I also really appreciate the guild picture too,(I am not a gamer but I know way too many) I love the episodes and Felicia Day just kicks butt! If a meet up every happens it would be cool, though I wonder what our group would decide on? Thank you again Aurora, all these people would have never connected or connected with you if you hadn’t taken a risk and started this. :)

Wow guys! Thanks for your kind comments! Makes me feel like I matter in the world! Perhaps an illusion, but a lovely one. :)

Tash–bummer that your bo’s family isn’t on board. Sorry if the blog has caused any upheaval, but I suspect that the blog is merely a safe place for them to direct their discomfort. Give them time, they might come around. Thanks also for your slam-dunk comment comparing CF to being gay, because I wrote an entire blog on it!

Sadie–I so agree about some of the attitudes on CF forums and outlets. Some people just want to have a place to rage, not really talk or make friends. Baby Off Board has actually been criticized for not criticizing parenst more!
A moderator just reads around the boards with me to make sure no one is spamming (which they shouldn’t be able to through our filters) or saying anything outrageously mean and uncalled for. Differing opinions, great. Catfight, not great. Pretty easy if you’re interested!

Tamara–I dream of a meetup! If there ever is one, I might have to attend incognito and give a second fake name, just so I can hang out and enjoy the fun without blowing my true idendity. I could wear a spy hat and wig or something and carry a magnifying glass, which would definitely draw no additional attention to me.

Aannnnd, that last sentence proves that my calm-down pill has most definitely kicked in. I had a terrible experience at the dentist years ago and now have to be drugged just to sit through cleanings. Fun for me, easeir for the dentist. I will now exit the online world and go think deep, meaningless thoughts while I eat cookies on the floor. Toodles!
